Dear Member,
At last we have good news to share
with you.
Groombridge Tennis Club is now officially open for business!
You know that the National Lottery rejected our application to help
fund this development but with loans from The Lawn Tennis Association
and The National Playing Fields Association and wonderful support
from the membership we have been able to complete the first phase
of our revised plans.
We start life with three quality courts, but without a club house
or toilet facilities - for the time being at least. However, we
are presently looking at costs and seeking planning approval for
a temporary structure to be errected on site soon.
What we can give you is "Tennis on The Tanyard".
Our dream has finally come true - in spite of all the problems and
obstacles that have plagued us along the way.
We will enhance our facilities as funds become available and our
progress will be shared with you in the columns of Match Point,
the official news letter of Groombridge Tennis Club.
Many members have been very generous with their time and financial
support and the club will continue to be dependent on members generosity
over the coming critical months.
We need to raise more money to install
a basic wooden structure with toilet facilities, and to complete
the car park and pathways. Fund raising activities will play a significant
part in that, but gifts of cash, however small, will speed our work
and help to place the club in a sound finanial positon.
Please help us if you can.
IMPORTANT!
The courts are now available for use. If you would like to play,
you will need the combination for the lock on the gate.

THE TANYARD
|
| |
The view across
The Tanyard is just fantastic. The arrival of Groombridge Tennis
Club has turned a sports field into a sports ground and the long
term ambitions of The Groombridge Sports Association are at last
coming good. - but our work on The Tanyard is far from done.
We must complete the car park, lay paths to the court entrances,
complete the perimeter fences and install a temporary club house.
Longer term, we plan to construct a permanent pavilion with
showers, changing facilities and toilets with a recreational
area allowing for food and drink preparation.
Based on current membership fees and known running costs, it is
unlikely we can complete this work for several years, so we
ask for your patience, understanding and support.
The founding committee has given way to a steering committee who
will oversee the running of the club over the coming months. Early
next year we will invite all members to offer their time
and services in the day to day running of the club.
We will be looking for individuals who are prepared to work in all
areas of the clubs activities. These iclude: Ladies and Men's
Team Captains; Planning, Finance, Ground Management, Social, and
Junior sub-committees.
As you know, we are affiliated to The Lawn Tennis Association, from
whom we have borrowed most of the money to build the courts on The
Tanyard.
We are committed to a youth development programme, and have appointed
Tony Doolan, a qualified LTA, coach to oversee this activity.
Tony and his team will offer coaching to anyone who wishes
it, at very reasonable charges, and details are available from him
on 07899755102
We are a friendly family club where everyone is welcome. Membership
is open to all, regardless of age or playing ability.
Tell your friends about us and encourage them to join. Sue Harrison
is our membership secretary and can be contacted on [01892]
864509 or sue.harrison@groombridge.com
if you require further
information.

TENNIS CLUB PROVISIONAL RULES
Please observe
these simple rules so that all members can enjoy using our
facilities.
* Access
to courts is available only to fully paid up members. (But
see below if bringing a friend).
* Wear your membership tag at all times
and be prepared to show it when challenged.
* Only wear tennis shoes on court. Other types of shoe
will mark or damage the playing surface.
* Dress suitably for the game.
* When all courts are in use and other members arrive,
those who have been playing longest should give way when their set
is completed or within a time period to be agreed between the two
parties.
* Be respectful to other court users.
* Minors must not be left unsupervised on the courts.
* Playing surfaces become slippery when wet or if affected
by frost. Exercise great care in these conditions. It may be necessary
to close the courts in high temperatures to minimise damage
to the playing surface.
* Access to the courts may be restricted on tournament and
competition days-or whilst coaching is taking place.
* Reduce the tension of the net when your game is over unless
others are waiting to move on to the court.
* Do not attempt to climb fences or reach beneath them to
recover balls from outside. Take great care near the river bank
when retrieving balls.
* If you are last to leave please lock both gates. The
courts must be vacated before dusk.
* Kindly refrain from using bad language on or in the vicinity
of the courts.
* Take empty bottles and rubbish away with you.
* Refrain from smoking on the courts.
* Report acts of bad behaviour or vandalism to a committee
member as soon as possible.
* Arrive and depart quietly - be considerate to our
neighbours.
* If you bring a guest along to play we ask you to make
a contribution of £3.00 per session to club funds. We
are depending on your honesty.
* The courts are for playing tennis only. The use of
skate boards, roller blades and the playing of other games
is strictly forbidden - they will damage the courts.
* Please do not bring pets on to club grounds.
* The club reserves the right to refuse entry to anyone
who does not adhere to these rules.
* In the interests of safety, do not park on the road.
* Take care of your children at all times. Please remember
that the club is not a secure area, and that the river can run deep
and the banks are steep.
These rules are provisional - any comments
or suggestions gratefully received.
